Over 100 canoe teams will be racing from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean this weekend in Panama's Ocean-to-Ocean cayuco Race, an annual event that began in 1954. The event, which takes place over three days from April 3-5, covers a distance of 50 miles, and rather than using modern canoes and kayaks, teams of between four and eight paddlers, compete in cayucos - traditional style dugout canoes made in Panama. The event is open to all members of the Balboa Paddle Club, and as all cayucos are built to the same standards, teams enter a raffle at the start of the race season to win a boat for the season.
The competition began in 1954 when a group from the Boy Scouts of America met with a native community on the Chagres River. As the group learned more about the cayucos, the main method of transport at the time, the idea for the endurance race was born and has grown from around 35 teams to 110 teams today. The race has two age categories, 14 to 21 years of age and 22 and older; and the race also attracts thousands of spectators, who attend the finish lines of each of the three legs, as well as some of the most scenic locations along the Panama canal.
